Bennett Underwood gave Rio Hondo Prep six solid innings and left with an 8-4 lead in Saturday’s Prep League showdown at undefeated (in league) Pasadena Poly.
The Panthers would get three in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on first base with two outs.
But Nathan Olivas was able to coax a fly ball to center that his brother Ryan Olivas snagged for the last out.
RHP held on for an 8-7 victory.
Underwood allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits.
He walked one and struck out two.
Nathan Olivas gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits, but was able to close out the victory.
Ethan Chan singled, doubled, scored and had an RBI for Poly.
Jason Mayo singled, doubled and scored, and David Mathias singled and scored.
Sam Howell walked, scored and had an RBI.
Jake Shafia had an RBI base hit and Sean Asperger went 2-for-3, scored and drove in two runs.
Jake Sherwindt singled twice, scored and had an RBI.
Adam Arther singled twice and scored.
Sam Howell got the loss for the Panthers after allowing a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on one hit and two walks.
Ryan Olivas singled twice, had two RBIs and scored a pair of runs.
Ryan McCulloch went 3-for-4, with a double and two runs scored, and Jack Van Cleve singled and scored.
Bennett Underwood had an RBI double and Gio Ortega scored twice.
Trevor Scott walked twice and scored and Damyan Diaz walked twice, scored and had two RBIs.
Up next: RHP will host Providence on Tuesday at 3:30 in another Prep League contest.
