Jaden Guzman’s RBI Single in Top of 8 Leads La Salle to a 3-2 Victory at Cathedral; Lancers Wins First Del Rey League Series of 2021

Baseball:

There are so many reasons La Salle High School and head coach Mike Solar should be proud of their baseball program.

The Lancers still haven’t had one practice on their own field or a single home game, before the season began, they lost a few solid contributors to transfer and have persevered through a number of injuries.

And yet after Saturday’s 3-2 victory at Cathedral in eight innings, La Salle finds itself just one-game back of first-place Bishop Amat in the Del Rey League standings.

Jaden Guzman’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning scored Evan Nahra for what turned out to be the game winning run.

It seemed both teams mirrored the other, scoring single runs in the fourth and seventh innings, but freshman David Mysza wasn’t going to allow the Phantoms to match the Lancers in the bottom of the eighth and secured the save.

Bradley Zantenson got the win, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing one run and one hit.

Guzman went 2-for-4, including a single, double and RBI.

Adrian Beltre Jr doubled and scored.

Doug Pyle went three scoreless innings to start Saturday’s game for La Salle and struck out four batters.

Cathedral opened the three-game set with a 9-4 win on Monday, but the Lancers answered back with a pair of one-run victories on Thursday and Saturday to win the series.

Up next: La Salle will travel to Ontario Christian on Wednesday.

First pitch is set for 4.

Quotable:

La Salle coach, Mike Solar: “I’m just so proud of the way these guys battled all week long, even in the game one loss. To come back and win this opening series the way we did against a really good team, having played on the road all week, is a testament to these players. They didn’t back down one bit. We got contributions from everyone in the series, and that’s what it’s all about. We’ve got a lot more work to do to get better, but this was a tremendous effort by these guys this week.”
