Boys Basketball:

It’s already a tall task to take on a talented and versatile program like Damien.

But when the Spartans get out to an 18-point lead after the first eight minutes, it’s going to be a long night.

And that was the case for La Canada on Saturday.

Damien out-scored La Canada, 25-7 in the first quarter, and the Spartans cruised to a 78-45 victory.

They are now 11-0 to start the 2021 season.

Malik Thomas led the way with 17 points.

Jimmy Oladokun and RJ Smith chipped in with 10 points apiece in the win.

Jacob Lee paced the La Canada offense with 11 points.

Ty Reynolds had 10 and Michael Herrick scored seven points in the loss.

Spivey Word and Chris Nickelberry had eight points apiece for Damien.

And Logan Venhoff chipped in six.

So far, the Spartans have defeated Glendora, Sierra Vista, Western Christian, Anaheim Canyon, Servite, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, Harvard-Westlake, Charter Oak, Bonita, Maranatha and now La Canada.

Damien’s closest game was an 62-55 victory over Harvard-Westlake on April 1.

The Spartans collective margin of victory through 11 games is 746-486.

Up next: Damien will travel to Claremont on Tuesday.
