After starting the 2021 season with losses to Arlington, Ramona and Temple City by a combined margin of 42-12, the Covina High School softball program needed a spark.
And the Colts got that, defeating Nogales, 23-5, for their first victory of the season.
All 11 Colts’ batters got at least one hit and nine of the 11 had two hits or more.
It would have been easy to choose almost anyone on the roster, like Jolene Rodriguez, who hit two home runs and had six RBIs.
Kennedy Griego went 4-for-5, with four runs and Maya Venegas had three hits and two RBIs.
Arianna Barrera contributed three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Samantha Centeno went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and Danielle Singley added a pair of hits and RBIs.
But for this week, we’re going with Covina’s only senior, Lily Castorena.
Castorena doubled, homered, scored four runs and had an RBI in the victory.
Up next: Covina (1-3) will host St. Paul (5-0) on Tuesday.
First pitch is set for 3:15.
