Chang, Hall & Requena Score Rushing TD’s; West Covina Defeats South Hills, 21-7, in Kings of Cameron Showdown

Apr 03 2021 04:56:36

Football:

West Covina hadn’t claimed a Kings of Cameron rivalry victory over South Hills since 2016.

That was three-time CIF champion Mike Maggiore’s last year leading the Bulldogs.

Fast forward to 2021, Maggiore is back, and so is the crown.

The Bulldogs’ defense held the Huskies offense in check all night and West Covina earned a 21-7 victory.

Zach Requena’s short TD run gave WCHS a 7-0 lead, and accounted for the only first-half points by either program.

South Hills temporarily changed the momentum in the third quarter, when, Noah Cabrera picked off a Wyatt Oak pass, weaved his way through some potential Bulldogs’ tacklers, and ran it back 49 yards for the score.

The Huskies caught the Bulldogs at 7-7.

But on the ensuing drive for West Covina, captain Jason Chang leapt into the south end zone after a 14-yard sprint.

It gave the Bulldogs a 13-7 lead after the point-after attempt failed.

Drew Hall would put the game away with his 34-yard TD run, and Chang would catch a 2-point conversion pass from Oak to extend the lead to 21-7.

In back-to-back weeks, Hall picked off both the Glendora quarterback last week, and snatched another tonight versus SHHS.

South Hills wasn’t sharp, but who could blame them, considering Friday was their first game of 2021.

The Huskies fought throughout and played spirited football, and they’ll continue to get better.

Jason Chang’s TD run in the third quarter gave West Covina a 13-7 lead, and the Bulldogs would never trail:
