The 111-mile ride home on Saturday night was either going to be awesome or brutal.
It turned out to be the former.
St. Francis headed out to Bakersfield for a 5 p.m. kickoff at Garces Memorial High School.
The Rams were 1-0 after a 43-6 beatdown of Tulare Union in their season opener.
And things didn’t get off to the greatest start for the visitors.
The Rams took a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and enjoyed a 28-14 advantage at the break.
But things started to change on the first play of the second half, and it wasn’t necessarily on purpose.
The Golden Knights opened with a squib kick that deflected off a Garces player, and was recovered by St. Francis.
It was the beginning of a 16-0 surge in the third quarter, and the Golden Knights built a 48-28 lead.
To their credit, Garces Memorial battled back, but St. Francis held on for the 48-42 victory.
Max Garrison carried St. Francis on his back.
The star junior had 43 rushes for 279 yards.
He scored four touchdowns and a number of 2-point conversions.
The University of Utah commit, Bryson Reeves, had a punt return for a TD, and Alejandro Ramirez had a pick-six in the win.
Up next: St. Francis will travel to Loyola next Saturday.
Quotable:
St. Francis coach, Ted Corcoran: “I’m very proud of the fight our players showed tonight! We could have easily tucked tail and given up down 28-14 at half. But that deficit was entirely self-inflicted. We came out and played total team football in the third and most of the fourth. We still have a lot of things to work on especially putting other teams away when we have the chance.”
