Football:
Rio Hondo Prep had no control of the impact that COVID-19 would have on everyone.
And that included the number of games it would get to play in the spring of 2021.
But when given the chance to exorcise its frustrations and to control its own destiny on the field, they more than made the best of it.
After a season-opening 44-0 victory over Trinity Classical, the Kares closed out the year with a 48-8 thumping of Viewpoint on Friday night.
Gio Ortega had an enormous night for RHP.
Ortega had game-highs in receptions (5), yards (60) and receiving TD’s (3).
He had TD catches of 5, 15 & 5 yards from quarterback Jack Van Cleve, and Ortega would also run a punt back 40 yards for another score.
RHP put the game away at the half with a 40-0 lead.
Statistics might not always tell the whole story, but this kind of says it all: The Kares had a 346-118 advantage in total offense (yards), a 220-26-yard difference in rushing and of the 30 first downs on Friday night, RHP had 22 of them.
Jack Van Cleve completed 6-of-8 pass attempts for 74 yards and three touchdowns.
His counterpart, Peter Boehm, was 7-of-12 for 67 yards for Viewpoint.
Jonathan Guerrero rushed for a game-best 112 yards on eight carries, including a 23-yard TD run.
Ryan McCulloch had four carries for 36 yards, and he opened the scoring with a three-yard TD run.
Anderson Lang had a 15-yard TD run and then finished it off by catching the two-point conversion pass from Armando Carbajal to make it an eight-point score.
Damyan Diaz had three catches for 42 yards in the win.
Ryan McCulloch (4.5 tackles), Jayden Sanchez (4.5), Joshua Sie To (4.5), Calvin Johnson (4), Joshua Taflinger (3.5), Aaron Saiz (3), Ryan Olivas (2.5), Ray Montez (2.5), Brandon Davis (2), Nathan Olivas (2) Gio Ortega (1.5) and Damyan Diaz (0.5) all did their part for the Kares’ defense.
Quotable:
Rio Hondo Prep coach, Mark Carson: “Jack and Gio were phenomenal connecting for three TD. I was also impressed with our defense and how they flew around and hit.”
