College Basketball:
Bryce Hamilton and Darius Brown II made up one of the SGV area’s best 1-2 punches in recent memory.
In 2016-17 and 2017-18 alone, the Pasadena High School stars led the Bulldogs to a combined overall record of 52-15, which included a 27-1 run in Pacific League play, and an 11-4 mark in the postseason.
PHS made back-to-back trips to the CIF-SS finals, but fell short to Harvard-Westlake and Chino Hills, respectively.
After devastating title-game losses, instead of feeling sorry for themselves, the Bulldogs rebounded and won three CIF State games in 2017, including one at Harvard-Westlake, and two more in 2018.
Bryce Hamilton continued his remarkable career at UNLV, and his production has increased in each of his three years in Las Vegas.
With two regular season games to go, UNLV (11-12 overall) is sixth in the Mountain West Conference with an 8-8 mark.
But Hamilton is having a terrific season.
He leads the Runnin’ Rebels in points per game (19), assists (3.2), steals (2), field goals made (151), total rebounds (123), total points (369) and total assists (63).
Hamilton is tied for first in minutes played (33 per game), second in rebounds (6.2), free-throws made (36) and third in 3-pointers (31).
Darius Brown II is also thriving.
The Cal State Northridge point guard averages a team-high 35 minutes (out of 40) per game.
DBII also leads the Matadors in assists per game (6), steals (2), field-goal percentage (49), total assists (103) and total steals (38).
Brown is second in total points (206), total rebounds (93), 3-pointers made (23) and field goals made (73).
His 11 points per game is third best and those 103 total assists are 54 more than the next closest Matador (TJ Starks).
With two games to go, CSUN is 9-10 overall, and 5-7 in Big West Conference action.
