Maranatha didn’t throw the ball much in Friday’s season opener against Crean Lutheran in Irvine.
But that was because they didn’t need to.
The Minutemen scored 28 points in the first quarter and never looked back.
MHS took down Crean Lutheran, 34-17, in week zero of the 2019 season at Portola High School.
Zakarri Black led the way with 108 yards on seven carries.
Black also scored two rushing TD’s.
Enrique Garza only attempted four passes and completed two.
But one was a TD to Isaac Fields and Garza did even more damage with his feet.
Garza scored twice and finished with 63 yards on just a pair of carries.
Isaac Fields gained 59 yards on two carries.
Fields also caught four passes for 59 yards, and that included the TD from Garza.
Vic Hoffman was a beast as usual, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Hoffman had six tackles, including three for loss.
Deuce Sterling had himself a night as well.
Sterling finished with four tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.
Up next: Maranatha will host Pasadena next Friday at 7.
The Bulldogs (1-0) earned a 28-7 victory at St. Genevieve in their week zero contest.
