Chavez, Ward, Magallanez Team up on Mound Thursday; South Hills Edges Charter Oak, 2-1, to Earn Hacienda League Championship

The South Hills-Charter Oak battle to capture the 2019 Hacienda League baseball championship was as competitive or more than any SGV-area race this season.

Consider this: South Hills edged Charter Oak, 2-1, in Thursday’s title game.

The Huskies earned the Hacienda League championship by one game, thanks to a game they won by one run.

Charter Oak had a one-hit advantage on Thursday and in 15 league games, both the Chargers and Huskies scored exactly 88 runs apiece.

But thanks to pitchers Adrian Chavez, Josh Ward and Justin Magallanez, South Hills has earned the title of Hacienda League champions.

Chavez has been incredible all year, and especially down the stretch.

Chavez (6-0, 1.35 ERA) got the win, after going four innings and allowing just one run on five hits.

Ward kept the lead over his 1 1/3 innings of work, allowing just one hit.

And Magallanez got the save, getting the last five outs to secure the championship.

Jacob Moreno singled home Paul Sanchez in the top of the third inning to tie the score at 1-1.

But that’s all the offense Charter Oak was able to muster against the South Hills trio.

Chris Ceballos was 2 for 2, with a single and a double.

Ceballos had the game’s lone extra-base hit.

Evan Avitia, Gordon Cooper and Adrian Nava also singled for the Chargers.

Nicholas Acedo pitched well enough to win, but he was saddled with the loss.

Acedo allowed both runs over his 5 2/3 innings of work on five hits.

Isaiah Ayala singled, had an RBI and run scored.

And Hector Almarez had the Huskie’s other RBI in the win.

Tommy Castillo singled and scored and Will Medina, Jonathan Hernandez and Anthony Rasmussen singled for South Hills.

Both Charter Oak and South Hills will wait until Monday to find out their playoff pairings.

CIF will post the baseball and softball brackets at 10 a.m. on www.cifss.org

One thing this 15-game, Hacienda League marathon has proved is that both South Hills and Charter Oak have enough depth in their pitching staff and they’ve been tested mightily in what both programs hope is a deep postseason run.
