Football:

Perhaps area JC football fans didn’t think too much about Chaffey knocking off Citrus (40-23), Santa Ana (44-21) and Moorpark (49-27) in the first three weeks of the 2026 season.

However, no one can deny that tonight’s 33-25 victory over No. 15 in the state, El Camino, is a big bleeping deal.

It was also the National-Southern Conference opener for both programs.

The Warriors were 2-0 before falling, 43-37, last week in overtime to Mt. SAC after a late Mounties rally.

Fast forward one week, and Chaffey led 33-10 before El Camino scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 7:31 of the contest.

The Panthers had statistical advantages in first downs (31-19), total offense (567-332), passing (320-286) and rushing (247-46).

Frankie Villalbazo accounted for 343 yards of total offense and three TDs.

Through the first four games, the Chaffey sophomore has 16 total touchdowns.

On Saturday, he completed 23-of-35 for 316 yards, including a pair of TD passes and one interception.

Villalbazo tossed a 17-yard TD to Julian Lofton-Lundy and a 10-yard scoring strike to Nolan Ellison.

He also had a 1-yard TD run midway through the third quarter to give the Panthers a 19-10 lead.

Trashaun James-Reek carried the ball eight times for 86 yards, including a 56-yard TD run late in the third quarter.

Jeremy Lenore gained 76 yards on 15 carries.

Nathan Enriquez led the Chaffey receiving corps with seven catches for 109 yards.

Julian Lofton-Lundy finished with 84 yards on six receptions, including TD receptions of 17 and 4 yards, the second of which came from Noahsaiah Frisco.

Aureliano Bedoy had three catches for 60 yards.

Vili Paama led the Chaffey defense with five tackles, while Jacob Ericson, Darion Flucker and Annas David totaled four tackles apiece.

Last week against Mt. SAC, Maika Eugenio threw a pair of TD passes and rushed for two more.

On Saturday, Eugenio completed 16-of-28 for 170 yards.

His only score of the night came on an 18-yard TD pass to Marcus Moore just 4:19 into the game to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead.

His replacement, Colin Creason was 5-of-11 for 116 yards.

Creason tossed TD passes of 8 and 45 yards to Alec Saunders in the fourth quarter.

Saunders caught seven passes for 138 yards.

Malachi Gordon and Joseph Terry had six tackles apiece to lead the El Camino defense.

Up next: The Panthers will close out the first half of the season next Saturday when they host Saddleback at 6.

After a bye week, Chaffey will travel to No. 1 Riverside on Thursday, October 8th.

Quotable:

Chaffey coach, Ben Buys: “Our guys bought in through the process. I knew we had a special group because of the way they worked together. We take it every week at a time. That’s how we work. We continue to get better and grow. Our staff is amazing. Frankie Villalbazo is a competitor. We needed a third-down conversion to win the game, and I called a play where he could run or throw for a first down and he ran for a first down. He’s amazing and he’s the best competitor I’ve ever seen. Our ground game was awesome. We went into the season knowing we had to run the ball for at least 150 yards per game, and we ran for 250 tonight. We have three or four guys who can run the ball. We look every time as our receiving corps as being our strength and they are all amazing in space. Our defense plays extremely hard. Coach Denton (defensive coordinator) has our defense prepared better than anyone I’ve ever been around.”
