Football:
Don’t let the final score mislead you.
Rio Hondo Prep was in control throughout its 35-21 victory over Rowland.
The Kares led 28-0 and 35-7 before the Raiders scored a pair of TDs in the final five minutes.
To their credit, though, Rowland had a 361-301 advantage in total offense, and they won the time of possession battle, 33-15.
I guess it helps when you have 57 offensive plays as compared to 35 for RHP.
Matthew Montez carried the ball five times for 107 yards.
That includes TD runs of 17 and 62 yards.
Christian Lee caught a 28-yard TD pass from Donald Scheffler, and a 90-yard pick-six.
Lee had a pair of catches for 39 yards and four carries for 15 yards.
Scheffler completed 7-of-9 for 113 yards and two scores.
Along with his scoring strike to Lee, Scheffler also found Nicolas Harrington on a 35-yard TD pass.
Lee led the RHP defense with eight tackles, while Harrington (7) and Matthew Har (5) combined for 12 tackles in the win.
Xavier Carrillo had a game-high 135 yards on 16 carries for Rowland.
Carrillo had TD runs of 33 and 5 yards.
Cooper Kinsley completed 10-of-18 for 187 yards.
Kinsley was picked once and tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Kayleb Nicholson with just 12 seconds left in the game.
Nicholson caught four passes for 61 yards, and Alan Hernandez had a 42-yard reception.
Daniel Mosqueda led the Raiders ‘D’ with five tackles, while Isaiah Wright and Fabian Valdez had one sack apiece for the visitors.
Up next: The Kares travel to Long Beach next Friday to battle St. Anthony at 7.
