Girls Athlete of the Week:
One way or another, the Palomares League title chase is destined to go to the wire.
And the two leading contenders were clearly Claremont and Glendora.
The Wolfpack and Tartans had one league loss apiece.
GHS claimed a 45-41 victory at CHS, and 29 days later, the Wolfpack left GHS as a one-point (41-40) winner.
The only problem with that narrative is that Bonita remained within striking distance, and they weren’t going to roll over and play dead for anyone.
This past Wednesday, BHS rolled to a 46-34 victory over visiting Ayala.
In that game, freshman Tressa Beatty had a team-high 16 points.
Beatty hit four 3-pointers, and scored 14 of her 16 in a second half run that allowed the Bearcats to pull away from the Bulldogs.
On Friday night, BHS hosted Claremont some 17 days after dropping a 39-36 decision at CHS.
For the second consecutive game, the Bearcats used a 25-15 second-half surge to pull away from an opponent.
BHS defeated CHS, 42-27, and knocked the Wolfpack out of first place.
Beatty finished with nine points, but more importantly, five of the nine came in a 17-7 fourth-quarter run.
Beatty is the daughter of Beau Beatty, who serves as co-head coach of the Bonita football program with the great Steve Bogan.
Including Wednesday’s victory over Ayala, Beatty finished the week with six 3-pointers.
With two games to play in the regular season, Bonita and Claremont trail first-place Glendora by one game.
The Bearcats, however, have a chance to catch the Tartans as they face off on Tuesday night at GHS.
The tip is set for 5:30.
